User research: summaryt

I conducted interviews and created empathy maps to understand the users. I’m designing for and their needs. A primary user group identified through research was working the travel agency which did not have different options as transport way.  This user group confirmed initial assumptions about Sky travel agency customers, but research also revealed that different type of transportation was not the only factor limiting users from traveling. Other user problems included Choosing exact time for best price, offering the list of variety entertainments during trips, tour guide, information about destinations or challenges that make it difficult to coordination between departure and arrival time and hotel reservation.

Different Options

Time

Accessibility

Apps for traveling don’t have a multi options for their transport.

The most of people are so busy. They could not spend a lot of time with onsite travel agency. They prefer to do it on line.

Platforms for booking are not equipped with assistive technologies.

persona

Zareen Blanch is a project manager that spend a lot of her time in emission who needs easy access to booking flight and hotel because she want to know the details of her trip and she does not have time to book the individually

User Journey Map

Sky Travel Agency lets users to choose their favorite transport ways and hotels which will affect in price and facilities by changing the options. We will measure effectiveness by tracking the variety of booking the transport ways through the app.

Starting the design

  • paper wireframes
  • digital wireframes
  • low-fidelity prototype
  • usability study

paper wireframe

Taking the time to draft iterations of each screen of the app on paper ensured that the elements that made it to digital wireframes would be well suited to address user paint point. For the home screen, I prioritized  a quick and easy ordering process to help users time.

* Stars were used to mark the elements of each sketch that would be used in the initial digital wireframe.

Digital wireframe

As the initial design phase continued, I made sure to base screen designs on feedback and finding from the user research.

This nav in the bottom of the main picture of the home screen makes it fast and easy for users to choose their goal.

These images and texts are provide the best offer for users.

Providing different transport ways for users to have multi choose.

In this chart users can choose their transport way and then they choose their date. Then the app offers different hours and different prices.

Here the app offers different and special tours to the users.

Low-fidelity prototype

The low-fidelity prototype connected the primary flow of travel agency. So the prototype could be used in usability study with users.

Usability study

Round 1

Round 2

  1. Users need to schedule the date in homepage, before choosing Transport way or Hotel
  2. Users need a more intuitive way to access profile icons.
  3. Users need a confirmation page with all of the details and review of booking before payment process.

  1. The checkout process has too many unnecessary steps.

  2. The information that users receive after searching, are too much and they need some filtering inside of users.

Refining the design

Mockups

Before  and after usability study

Based on the theme that: it is not immediately clear how to schedule the date, an insight is: users need to schedule the date in the homepage, before choosing Transport way or Hotel.

Based on the theme that: some of participants creating a profile is difficult. An insight is: users need a more intuitive way to access profile icons.

The second usability study revealed frustration with receiving a lot of data. I used filtering to more organise information. In this way users could choose one or more options and sort the data.

High-fidelity prototype

The final high-fidelity prototype presented cleaner user flows for booking and checkout.

Accessibility considerations

Used icons to help make navigation easier.

Provided access to users who are vision impaired through adding alt text to images for screen readers.

Takeaways

Impact:

The app makes users feel like Sky travel agency really thinks about how to meet their needs.

One quote from peer feedback:“The app is so helpful and I can manage the details of my trips! I would definitely use this app for my trip and offer it to my friends.”

What I learned:

While designing the Sky travel agency app, I learned that the first ideas for the app are only the beginning of the process. Usability studies and peer feedback influenced each iteration of the app’s designs.

Next steps

Conduct another round of usability studies to validate whether the pain points users experienced have been effectively addressed.

Conduct more user research to determine any new areas of need.
